Every new year we all make resolutions to become better versions of ourselves, I do it every single year and it only last a few months. This year I decided it was time to stop "pretending" and really give it a go. I always talk about wanting to lose at least a few pounds and just be in better shape, but then I don't do much to follow up. At this point in my life it's not longer about looking good though, I am 42 and I worry about staying healthy so that I can see Sammy grow up and that I can be around for my grandkids as long as possible. It's really time for me to stop making excuses and make a real changes in my entire life.
With that goal in mind, Adrian and I have signed up for the new gym that is opening up next week. I've done the gym thing before but this time we signed up for a gym that I think will make it easier to stick to it. I am also making other changes in my day that involve better choices and moving around a lot more. I'd like to share some tips on a few of the changes that I have made which I think you might find beneficial if you are also trying to get healthier this new year. These simple changes: like stopping by Walmart for new V8 Veggie Blends, might make a bigger difference than you would think.
Three Ways to a Healthier Day
Breakfast: It's the most important meal of the day and yet I always skip it. I am a coffee drinker and for me breakfast is usually two cups of coffee with a lot of sugar. Not the best way to start any day right? By mid-day I have the jitters and a headache the size of Texas. One of my new changes has been to have breakfast every single morning, no matter how busy. I am also substituting one of my cups of sugar laden coffee with a glass of V8 Veggie Blends in Carrot Mango.
Carrot & Mango? Yes ma'am! I have always loved V8 and now I have a new version of these beverages to give me my daily servings of fruits and veggies. Introducing delicious blends of vegetables with a touch of fruit from V8®. These healthy beverages contain 75% juice, 1 full serving of vegetables per 8oz serving, and are an excellent source of antioxidant vitamins A, C, & E.
Move around more: One of the best parts about having a dog is that it forces you to have to get up and out of the house a few times a day. I like to go out first thing in the morning for a small walk around the neighborhood. This morning walk helps clear the cobwebs from my brain and it gets my mind and body ready for another long day. Sometimes my days are so busy, this will be the only time I will see the outdoors, so I take it slowly and really enjoy the outdoors while I am walking my doggie.
Dump the midday fatty snacks: When I skipped breakfast I was always dying for a snack by mid day. But now I find that I no longer crave those calorie filled snacks because I am not dying of hunger and ready to make bad choices. Instead, when I catch my first work break, I can enjoy a glass of V8 Healthy Greens.
Don't get me wrong, it's not like I won't snack later in the evening with my little girl. I am not going to completely take junk foods out of my life, it's not about that, it's about give and take. If I make better decisions in the morning, maybe I can have that brownie at night and not feel guilty.
My mom used to give us V8 when I was little, and I remember not being the biggest fan. I think when you're Mexican you grow up with V8 at home as the norm, so I really like that now there is a version of it that I really do enjoy drinking more. I'm going to take my mom a few bottles this weekend so she can try the new versions too.
You can find V8 Veggie Blends at Walmart. Each 8oz. serving is 60 calories or less with no sugar added and no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives so you can feel really good about giving some to the family.
In 2016 I want to make myself a priority and with small changes I do believe I will begin to see that better and healthier version of me. I don't want to weigh 120 pounds nor do I want to go back to being 20. I just want to feel better when I get up in the mornings, I want to be able to walk more than a few blocks without feeling faint. Know what I mean?
Do you have a goal in mind for 2016 that involves getting healthier? What are some of the steps you will be taking to reach this goal?
