My mom is now 80 years old but is still really independent. She's always valued that independence so much, that's why it's hard on her to have to rely more and more on the rest of us as she has gotten older. She now gets sick so much more than before, her blood pressure tends to skyrocket a few times a week and she tires out pretty easily. But overall she does pretty good on the daily. She cooks for herself, she goes about her normal schedule of cooking, cleaning, watching television and talking on the phone. She's definitely not at the point of needing a full-time caregiver, yet.
I live five houses away and am in and out of her house all day long so I see her all day. I take her to the doctor, shopping and we go out at least every two weeks for a few hours. In essence I am something of a silent caregiver, making sure she's okay without crowding her or taking away any of the independence she values so much.
Even when I am not with her, I am on the lookout for things to make her life a little easier and more comfortable. If you have an aging parent, neighbor or other relative, you know that they appreciate small gestures. Today I want to share how you can easily and affordably put a little basket of goodies together for them. A small gift like this goes a long way to show these people in our lives that they are cared for.
Prepping a Simple & Thoughtful Caregiving Basket
- Find a basket or container that can be reused. The one I found was under $4 and will be perfect for storing a lot of personal items under my moms bathroom sink.
- Reading material or an e-book reader is another great item to add to this basket. If giving a book it doesn't even have to be new. Gently used books are welcomed by all book lovers.
- One can never have enough pairs of comfy socks. I look for the smaller breathable variety since it's starting to get warm.
- One of my favorite items to include in any gift basket that is really affordable is a large tea mug filled with my favorite tea blend.
- Something else sure to be loved by the receiver, especially if they are older, are puzzles, crossword puzzle magazines or an adult coloring book. I decided to include a Rubixcube which will either drive my mom mad or give her hours of entertainment trying to solve it.
- Little bags of tissues are always welcome in a gift basket, these small packs are perfect for taking from room to room, or on-the-go.
- Adding a framed family photo is another really personal touch for a gift basket. I love making these little family photo books because they do make great little gifts.
