The back-to-school season is officially here friends and I don't know how it's going for you but we're still getting used to the change in routine. We enjoyed our summer so much that it was a bit hard to get back into the daily grind of waking up at 6 AM, getting Sammy fed and off to school on time. Something making it extra hard is that her school changed the start time and she now goes in a full 45 minutes earlier than last year. Now Sammy has to be up an alert so much earlier, which can be hard for a nine-year-old. That's why giving Sammy a really good breakfast is so important. Her little brain and body have to be ready so much earlier now and that's why we make sure she's got something really good in her system to get her up, alert, and ready to face a really long day.

When there isn't a lot of time to make a complete breakfast we often turn to making a favorite from my childhood, a licuado de platano. A licuado or smoothie made with low-fat milk, bananas, vanilla and NESTLÉ® NESQUIK® Powder is a favorite in our household, just like it was a favorite at my house when I was growing up. The only difference between my smoothie and my moms is that I don't add a raw egg. I think the addition of a raw egg was something that came from my grandma's original recipe from Guadalajara, Mexico where she owned and ran a smoothie stand.

Though my entire family has always try to replicate my grandmothers carrot and banana smoothies, even buying professional machines and using ingredients that come from Mexico, no one has ever been able to. I'm pretty sure that my recipe doesn't come close either, but I do know that when we make these banana smoothies and I get that first sip, the first thought and memory that comes to my mind is my grandmother.

Licuado de platano con NESTLÉ® NESQUIK® Powder: (3 servings)
2 cups of low-fat milk
1 1/2 bananas
1/2 tablespoons of vanilla
1/4 cup NESTLÉ® NESQUIK® Powder
1 cup of ice
cinnamon powder

Preparation:
Add all ingredients into blender and blend for about a minute, until smooth.

Serve immediately for best taste and top generously with cinnamon powder.

As part of a complete breakfast, this banana smoothie ensures that Sammy has those extra 8g of protein (when combined with 8 fluid ounces of low-fat milk). NESTLÉ® NESQUIK® Powder has 45% less sugar than the leading chocolate syrup and it gives my licuado that authentic chocolate flavor that my grandmothers licuados had. If it doesn't taste good, Sammy isn't going to drink it, but she loves her morning banana smoothie.

You can pair a banana smoothie with just about anything: sweet bread, toast, oatmeal or even a bowl of fresh fruit. With everything that Sammy has ahead of her on a busy school day, this smoothie will give her a delicious kick start to the day.
