Do you ever watch movies with big families where everyone is perfect: the kids are clean 100% of the time, everyone gets along and there are no eccentric grandmas yelling at everyone in Spanish, and wonder why your family is nothing like that? That's why one of my favorite movies of all time is My Big Fat Greek Wedding where the family can't possibly get any more eccentric. My Big Fat Greek Wedding showed us that families don't have to be "perfect". Something else that My Big Fat Greek Wedding showed us is that no matter what happens or how they don't always show it, at the end of the day it's your family that's going to stand by your side, no matter what.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding is such a funny and feel-good movie and something that really reminded me of my Mexican culture and our "beliefs" is the way that the dad uses Windex® Original Glass Cleaner to cure any and all ills. In my culture we have products like the famous Vaporub that are supposed to cure just about anything. The minute that someone feels a slight cold or pain, my mom runs for the Vaporub and we slather that everywhere, even if it's something that has nothing to do with the product. So when the dad brought out the Windex® for bites and pimples, that was so real, it was hilarious. Their family is Greek and we are Mexican, yet no matter how different our cultures may seem, they are actually pretty similar and really the most important thing of all is family.
Family is a big thing for Latinos and nothing makes me unhappier than not being able to spend time with my crazy family. That's why when we are going to have a get-together I always pull out the Windex® Original Glass Cleaner to help me get the house spic and span before they all arrive.
