With Christmas only a week away, I would like to talk about a few ways we can make this holidays season a little bit greener. I have always hated how much waste happens with gift wrap, not only is it super expensive and it's only used once, but all that garbage that it makes is too much. So how can we cut down on some of that waste?

An easy way to cut down on some of the gift giving waste is to recycle some items from around the house. With so many kids, there never seems to be a shortage of shoe boxes and that is one of my favorite things to recycle. Instead of buying boxes at the store, or at least so not to have to buy so many of them, I ask all of the kids to give me any boxes that are still intact. Then I grab the newspaper that I always keep for just this type of project, some ribbon and I am ready to dress my shoe box into a holiday gift box.

Step1: Wrap shoe box with newspaper. I always pick the Arts & Leisure part of the paper because it has colorful parts and the crossword, which make for a very interesting and fun pattern.

Step2:  I had this leftover ribbon from last year but something else that works really nice for this is leftover yarn. Now take your ribbon and wrap the shoe box in a festive and cute manner. I am so not the queen of wrapping but even I can get this part done okay.

Step3: Use a piece or two of holly (real or fake) to finish of the look.

How cute does this look? I love this finished wrapped gift and it totally matches with the look of my apartment. By the time I finish wrapping all of my gifts, my white tree (with black ornaments) is going to look super cool. It's definitely an original way to go and there is going to be a lot less gift wrap wasted, and that is something I can totally get behind.

Another way to have a greener Christmas is to give the gift of innovation and less waste by giving Energizer®EcoAdvanced™ Batteries with all the gifts that require batteries this year. Energizer®EcoAdvanced™ Batteries are the world’s first AA battery made with 4% recycled batteries and an easy way to gift a little greener. Plus Energizer®EcoAdvanced™ AA and AAA batteries are Energizer®'s highest performing, most responsible alkaline batteries; by using longer lasting and reliable batteries, consumers use fewer batteries, create less waste and have less impact on the planet.

Who doesn't want batteries that last longer AND are better for the planet?

This holiday season, #PowerYourHoliday with Energizer® EcoAdvanced™ Batteries and feel good knowing that you are helping cut down on waste. I found mine at Target but you can find them at most retailers.

I'm so looking forward to next week and watching all the kids open up their gifts. I love the holidays, they are a time to really spoil our little ones and give them a few things that will really make them happy. Don't forget to use some of my tips for a little greener Christmas, so that we can all cut back on our footprints just a bit. What tips can you share with us for cutting down on waste this holiday season?
