I'm one of those overly anxious parents who is always expecting an accident to happen, especially when it comes to the smaller kids. Stairs, toys all over the floor, and small objects are the stuff of nightmares to me, and really they are very scary. That's why as a parent and grandparent, I take the kids safety as a top priority. I'm the one who's always picking things up off the floor, holding them as they go down the stairs at home and constantly hovering around to make sure no one is putting anything in their mouth. I'm also the one who drives everyone crazy with the constant worrying, but it's not something I can turn on and off, I'm wired like that already. But we can do so much to keep our kids as safe as possible. Here are a few tips that I myself use, to keep these little people safe and sound at home.
Keep floors clear of toys: Falling or tripping because of toys on the floor is a very real danger, not just for children. My mom is older and a small toy on the ground can cause an accident. After play every toy has to be picked up off the carpets and floors.
Stove knob covers: The stove and knobs are another danger when there are small children around. My grandson loved going into the kitchen at night and turning the knobs. You can find stove knob covers in stores and online, these work just like the doorknob ones and don't let kids turn the knobs.
Medicines: We keep a very stocked medicine cabinet, with everything from fever medicine to the kids everyday gummies. All of these are dangerous in children's hands and have to be kept locked or out of reach.
Laundry room safety: One must never forget the importance of responsible use and storage of laundry pods, along with all cleaning products that a child can come in contact with. A lot of laundry products like Tide Pods and Gain Flings, come in colorful and very appealing packaging, which means it can be appealing to kids too. These are never to be left where a curious child can handle them. If you don't have a laundry room that you can lock up, keeping them out of reach is important.
No house is ever completely child or accident proof. It is a constant, everyday job of parents to make sure that a child's environment is as safe as possible. But child safety doesn't have to be a scary thing. Right now I don't have children under the age of 7 staying with me, but when one of the boys is coming over, I find it helpful to walk around my place and looking at it through the eyes of a 2 year old. They find so many things interesting right? I place all candles and breakables up high, I move Sammy's small toys to a high shelf and I make sure all the electric plugs are covered and I follow the tips above. That way when they are here, we can enjoy our time without stressing (as much).
