Exploring the World like Peep #peepenespanol

Have you heard of Peep and the Big Wide World?  Peep and the Big Wide World/El Mundo Divertido de Peep is a popular Emmy Award-winning animated series for 3-5 year olds on public television (check your local listings). Narrated by comedian Joan Cusack, the series stars a wide-eyed chicken named Peep, a robin named Chirp, and an irascible, endearing duck named Quack that live in a large urban park—a place of endless wonder, adventure, and mystery – perfect for learning science and math concepts each and every day! Peep effectively models science inquiry skills for preschoolers, including making predictions, observing, and problem-solving in the physical world.

Today after school Sammy, her dad and myself, set off to our neighborhood park to play a game just like the one Peep and his friends play. Sammy already knows her shapes since she is 7 years old, but in order to reinforce them and make it really fun for her, we decided to go on a shape scavenger hunt. With her Peep magnifying glass in hand, she set of to see just how many different shapes she could find hidden within the park she visits so often.

In how many different places could she find hidden squares, triangles, 

rectangles and circles?

 It was surprising for Sammy to find just how many shapes are all around her and how they make up a part of our everyday lives. 

Circles, squares, rectangles and even octagons, they are everywhere.

Today, our neighborhood park was transformed into a place of adventure, knowledge and endless wonder. 

Sam turned the park upside down and found many shapes in places she had never noticed before.

Peep and the Big Wide World inspired us to look again and see just how much of our world we are not seeing. Exploring can happen anywhere, all you need is a little bit of imagination and a whole lot of fun is waiting to be had (learning too!).

Peep and the Big Wide World has educational content also tailored specifically for home-based childcare educators, a group typically underserved when it comes to professional development and educational resources, especially for science education. These one-of-a-kind materials are available in both English and Spanish. This includes online yearlong curriculum and professional development tools. Peep and the Big Wide World/El Mundo Divertido de Peep has re-launched a new web-based digital hub.  The mobile-friendly digital hub gets preschoolers engaged using fun activities and helps parents be ready and confident to facilitate the exploration of math and science with their child. Sammy is a bilingual child so I find this site very helpful and we have many more fun ideas for games and learning.
